Cassandra Wilsons swinging for her own creative fences this time. The sultry,
gentle, acoustic guitars on her last five recordings have been largely
jettisoned for a more keyboard-and percussion -friendly approach — which
includes lots of programming and loops. To that end, shes enlisted
flavor-of-the-year producer T-Bone Burnett and keyboardist Keith Ciancia. This
pair hired a stellar group of players that include drummer Jim Keltner, bassist
Reginald Veal (a near-constant here), guitarists Colin Linden and Marc Ribot,
and programming whiz Mike Elizondo. Mike Piersante plays "keypercussion" (read:
drum loops), Jay Bellerose and Bill Maxwell also contribute kit work. Keb Mo
guests on a track. Ever since signing to Blue Note, Wilsons walked a razor-wire
between blues, pop, and jazz, but her recordings have always been intimate
affairs whether she was singing songs by Robert Johnson or Van Morrison. While
she does preserve a degree of that intimacy here, some of it has fallen by the
wayside in favor of the near-constant presence of drum loops, with subtle
samples dropped in giving the entire proceeding a slightly more urban feel. A
startling example is "Go to Mexico," where a percussion loop and the vocal chant
from the Wild Tchapitoulas "Hey Pocky A-Way," are directly sampled with new
words and instrumentation layered over the top — including Veal copying the
bassline. In addition, Wilson sings in a voice not really heard from her before.
Intertwined with her trademark, smoky contralto (Wilson has been deeply
influenced by Abbey Lincoln and Betty Carter but has become a true song stylist
of her own), is a falsetto in the verse that feels like a deliberate attempt at
singing "straight" modern pop. The thin, compressed production with her vocal
mixed so high above the largely keyboard-driven instrumentation feels forced, at
odds with the tune, and nearly sterile. Thankfully, its the exception rather
than the rule on Thunderbird. The atmospheric keyboard line that introduces her
read of Jakob Dylan and the Wallflowers "Closer to You," gives way to Keltners
softly insistent trip-hop shuffle, Veals minimal bassline, and Ciancias piano,
keyboards, and loops are the working elements here. Wilsons guitar drifts in
under her aching, seductive vocal on the refrain as Veal subtly anchors her.
Wilsons read of Blind Lemon Jeffersons "Easy Rider" starts out that way — with
Linden and Ribot playing snaky and skeletal for the first two verses. It roars
to life about two-and-half-minutes in, fully electric, dirty, nasty, and
drenched in slow, deep swamp blues. Keltners playing is utterly transfixing
here. At a touch over seven minutes, its entrancing dynamics provide a virtual
journey though the blues both past and future. The slippery drum loops re-enter
on the band-written original "It Would Be So Easy," and here, club music touches
pop touches the roots of the blues — the former two happen because of the
instrumentation, the latter is due to Wilsons instrument, which embodies them
all and creates a new and ghostly meld. "Red River Valley" is the albums
centerpiece. Accompanied only by Linden electric slide guitar, it is full of
the desolation of the tunes intent, but framed in the context of the Delta.
Its one of two guitar/vocal duets here; the other one, the ballad "Lost," is
more late-night Julie London than Billie Holiday. Willie Dixons "I Want to Be
Loved" is wonderful update of the blues, and "Poet" may not hit the Urban Top
Ten chart, but it should; its wondrously soulful, sexy, and glossy. While
Wilson has certainly not lost any of her singular talent for interpreting the
Chicago blues through the lens of jazz and pop , she has expanded her palette
once more by creating an entirely new bag from which we might hear pop, through
the age-old hypnotic, sensual, incantory veil of the blues.

On 28th September 1996, a crowd gathered at the beautiful 13th Century church of St Mary & All Saints in rural Surrey, England. The purpose was to rehearse and then perform two concerts in aid of church funds, the music varying from pastoral to gospel but all deemed appropriate!

The choir (numbering 16), string quartet, and organist were reading from music prepared in the weeks before by Gary Brooker, whilst the front line rock band played ad lib on acoustic instruments. The rector, the Revd. Geoffrey Willis, had managed to squeeze an audience of 150 into the ancient pews, half local congregation and half rock fans, and with 25 performers and the necessary staging and equipment, the little church was bursting at its sacred seams!
In the days before, Gary had decided to arrange a mobile recorder in case the unique evening turned out to be worth saving. As with any one-off effort, total perfection is not the objective, but rather to communicate to everybody present what live music is all about – Enjoying Yourself! and so bumps, groans, jokes, tuning, flying insects, and musical hesitancies, are all included as they happened, and as they were experienced by everybody that night.

The magnificent walls, arches, and windows of St Mary & All Saints have surely heard many sounds and words over its 700 year history, but as the echoes faded into the dark corners that night, it must have felt that something special had happened – it had – Within Our House.

Procol Harum fans (and I assume you are such or why the heck are you looking for Gary Brooker records ?! )Like a lot of you back in the early seventies I too judged a solo album by an ex-member of the Procol family by the same high standards we applied to that beloved entity.Thus: Robin Trowers guitar histrionics ala Hendrix were admirable, and Matthew Fishers pop oriented albums were nice, but nothing solo-wise was gonna fill the bill , because Procol Harum were the sum of their parts. Well thats the way I felt, too, until I picked this LP up in 1978. Staying faithful to a band you loved is one thing, its easy to forgive a member for a misguided attempt at self expression,but when a member of said band puts out an album as sastisfying as this one is..well,as we say in Oklahoma, "them grits got gravy!". Harum fans rejoice! Gary is singing with that magnificent voice, hes got the piano working like it should, and ol Keith Reids along for a couple of songs. It aint exactly Harum , but then it aint exactly not. George Martin produced this so its a tad too polite, if you know what I mean,and a little B.J. Wilson seasoning would have added some much needed chaos.Those caveats aside ;I give it a very high rating because Procol Harum fans wont be disappointed ,and if by some strange incident of computer mishap the Gary Brooker neophyte wandered through the garden fence by accident you just got lucky because one of the finest white soul voices out there is available for yer listening pleasure.Daves Fave; the completely un -Procol like "Angelina ".Its so cool, Herb Alpert cut an instrumental version on it!
